Oak Park, Golf Course Road, Letterkenny, Co Donegal, F92 F6NF

€575,000 - Asking Price|5 Bedrooms

History

Oak Park is an important Georgian country residence of primarily late 18th/early 19th century construction retaining much of its original form and character. Set in mature parkland overlooking Lough Swilly and the historic fording point of Farsetmore, scene of Shane O’Neill’s defeat by Hugh O’Donnell in 1567, Oak Park is believed to be located on the c. 1,000 acre ‘Carranagilly’ lands awarded to Sir John Vaughan at the Plantation of Ulster. The property had been acquired by John Wray, an ‘English gentleman’ by 1619 when a fortified two-story stone structure standing ‘in a good place for the King's service’ was in existence. Part of this early structure may have been incorporated into the present structure when it was enlarged c.1800. In the 19th century Oak Park was home to William Wray Esq., a High Sheriff for Donegal. It was also the last home of social activist Norah Lyle-Smith, an important figure in the Suffragette movement and close associate of the Pankhursts.
