West Gate Lodge, Markree Castle, Collooney, Co. Sligo Sold

€150,000 - Asking Price|1 Bedroom, 70 sqm approx

Unique gate lodge property adjoining Markree Castle, Collooney, Co. Sligo.

The West Gate Lodge of Markree Castle is acknowledged to be one of the finest Gothic Revival Gate Lodges in Ireland. The entrance gates and gate lodge were designed by architect Francis Goodwin in 1825 and completed in 1832 for Edward Joshua Coper as part of a plan of modernisation for the estate. The castle itself was also remodelled in the Gothic Revival style at the same time and stable yard buildings were constructed in the same vein. The gate lodge was built in a position of prominence set back from the main access road to Sligo from Dublin in order to reflect the importance of the Cooper family in Sligo to those arriving the area. According to the architect, it was hoped “that through refined taste and discriminating judgement... it will appear clothed in those attributes of ancient grandeur which must render it a highly interesting and most commanding feature amongst the bold and romantic scenery of the neighbourhood”. At that time the Cooper estates compromised approximately 32,000 acres in Sligo. This was one of the largest in Ireland belonging to a family of commoners, the Coopers having been denied a title after opposing the Act of Union in 1800. Edward Joshua Cooper was M.P. for Sligo and Markree was also home to a world famous observatory that had what was, at the time, the largest telescope in the world. It is unusual in an Irish context, that the original size and scale of the gate lodge and surrounding walls have survived intact.

The gate lodge is situated on rising ground set well back from the Sligo/Dublin road in a half moon shape with open ground to the front to emphasise the grandeur of the entrance. It was designed as the principal entrance to the Markree Estate and was used as such until the 1950s. The building is built from hand-cut Ballisodare limestone with castellated parapets and posterns in the Gothic Revival style. The principle feature is the ‘telegraphic tower’ with a circular cut stone staircase and a viewing area at the top, a viewing balcony half way up and access to the archway spanning the road. Access to the tower is from inside the residence which is located on the West side of the entrance gate. Ostensibly the function of the tower was to send messages from one estate to another i.e. from Castle Nino and Temple House to Markree, part the architect’s innovative idea to provide a means communication between big estates. While a network of towers was planned, this was the only one built and therefore remains the sole example.
