Ballyconnell is situated on the N87 at the junction of Annagh, Cullyleenan, Doon and Derryginny. The town sits at the foot of Slieve Rushen mountain and is a mile from the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. The area is well served by public transport, providing the area with easy access to the surrounding areas.

The industry in the area is mainly agricultural, but it also has a large cement factory (owned by Sean Quinn), a plastics factory and an animal feeds plant. Tourism is an important part of the town's economy with cabin cruisers using it as a stopping place when navigating the Shannon-Erne Waterway.
