The Mall
Ramelton
Co Donegal
F92 N9E2
Description
HISTORY
The Mall comes to the market at a time when people are returning / moving to Ramelton from near and far. This beautiful home, which featured in House and Home magazine, was lovingly rebuilt, redecorated and restored by the current owners in the early 1990’s following a chimney fire in 1985. The house retains its originally period features but also has all the modern conveniences.
Steeped in history, the house was built in 1830 by James Love. It passed to James Malseed in 1880 and then to the Gamble family in the 1920’s where they ran a successful department store and renowned all over the north west. The shop was at the centre of the busy port where boats from Glasgow and Belfast docked. From the front of the house tickets to the New World were purchased and passengers took the tender from Ramelton Port directly in front of the house, to the steamer which cast anchor in Portsalon and onwards to the Titanic and other ships. Framed original tickets for the White Star Line hang proudly in the hall.
LOCATION
Ramelton is a vibrant market town with many new shops, coffee shops and restaurants having opened in the last few years and is well served by Whoriskey’s Spar shop. One National School is directly behind the house and the other a short distance away. The feeder buses for the secondary school leave from the front door. Gamble Square in front of the house is home to weekly fish and vegetable market stalls. A couple of times a year it hosts a gathering of vintage cars and there are often other remarkable dalliances such as once a horsebox with a small carriage drew up, the ramp was let down and a pack of huskies were attached to the carriage and taken for their daily exercise. Whether it is the bustle from Gamble Square or the ever-changing view of the River Lennon there will always be something to keep the new owners amused. Equally they can escape to the very private garden to the rear which used to be on the Donegal Garden Trail, and runs all the way to Tank Road. Letterkenny is within easy reach and the beaches at Rathmullan are only 15mins from Ramelton.
