Once only an indulgence for those who could afford it, the idea of creating a home cinema is a lot easier and cheaper than you might think. Basically, we’re talking a supersized TV screen or a projector screen, add in a few comfy chairs complete with extendable leg rests and the stage is set for a cinematic experience, all from the comfort of your own home. Just think of the joy of not having to listen to people chomping their way through the entire screening! Or at least if they have leanings towards such habits you can be comforted by knowing that it’s your home, your rules…

When designing your home cinema, the most important element is to get the position of your screen just right so that all fellow viewers will enjoy a perfect screening experience. Once you have allocated a space in which to create the look, position any available seating around the focal point and work out what needs to go where before committing to installing your screen. There’s no point in spoiling yourself with the idea of a home cinema unless it’s going to work for everyone in the audience! Sit in all the available seating and assess the pros and cons and vantage points before you give the green-light to its positioning.

Unless you’re living in glorious isolation in a detached home, then you will have to seriously consider how the impact of noise from your new fun zone could impact on your immediate neighbours. Soundproofing could provide the perfect solution, while it may be an added cost that you didn’t factor in when the idea first crystallised, it will be worth it in the long run as who wants to listen to La La Land on mute?? Or if Game of Thrones is more your thing – would subtitles really capture the thrill of the action??
Just because we call it a home cinema doesn’t mean it negates the fact that you can use it to play your favourite old home DVD recordings and enjoy a blast from the past on the big screen snuggled up alongside your family at the weekend. Everyone enjoys looking back on moments that created memories of long fun-filled summers and snow filled winters when lying down in the wet snow making snow angels seemed like a great idea at the time!
