Property Pad

Fancy making your home work for you in a whole new way? With location agents continually scouting the country for homes to rent for the latest TV series, big budget films and small independent productions, they are always on the lookout for a good property that will provide the perfect backdrop for their filming needs. It’s not only for large-scale productions, they also need homes to shoot commercials and fashion shoots that may only take a day or two with potentially a post- production reshoot if needed. From large country estates and small rural holdings to regular urban semi-detached and terraced homes, all are of interest as each have their own particular charm.

Contrary to the notion that only the most up-to-date contemporary homes will be of interest to a location agent or large stately homes, it all entirely depends on the theme and storyline that needs to be given the right backdrop. If they’re shooting a period drama or need a property to reflect the 1950s or 1960s then to find a home that has remained untouched by modern interior intervention would be the ideal, but if this proves hard to locate then they can just adapt the set as long as the fundamental elements are there to work with.

Some productions may need to change the colour of your paintwork or put up new wallpaper, add shelving and remove your existing furniture which they’ll put into storage for you. This would be more typical for a longer shoot where you will need to vacate your home for the duration of filming, but they will put you up in rented accommodation nearby for however long it takes. While this might seem alarming initially, the deal is that your home will be returned to you in exactly the same condition as you left it, with not a trace of the makeover remaining.

Clearly nobody is going to go through this amount of disruption unless there was a financial gain at the end of it. Aside from the novelty factor and enjoyment you can take from seeing your home on the big screen, there is the potential to earn good money from the process which is dependent on how long the production team are in your home and the set budget for the shoot. This would all be negotiated at the start to give you a guide on what you might expect to earn and if production runs over the agreed time limit – happy days – that figure could move upwards!
