About the Area
Youghal (pop. 6,597) lies about 30 miles east of Cork city at the mouth of the River Blackwater and is a town with something for almost everyone. It's a heritage town with a fascinating history, sandy beaches, excellent seafood and cafes, sailing, golfing and bird watching. It was an important medieval town before being destroyed in 1579 and granted to Sir Walter Raleigh. Allegedly he planted the first Irish potato here in 1588.
Today the old part of the town lies at the foot of a hill and the newer part has spread out along the edge of the bay. Within the walled town buildings from different eras sit happily side by side. Youghal's landmark is the Clock Gate, built in 1771, but it also has several other unusual buildings; Myrtle Grove, an Elizabethan Manor house once owned by Sir Walter; the Red House, a Dutch style house dating from the early 18th century and Tynte's Castle, a ruined 15th century towerhouse. It's one of Ireland's most popular seaside towns and in the summer rental properties are in high demand.
