Croí Cónaithe – Housing for All

Croí Cónaithe

In May 2022, the government announced the establishment of a Housing for All initiative called Croí Cónaithe catering to both cities and towns nationally.

The Croí Cónaithe (Cities) Scheme is to support the building of apartments for sale to owner-occupiers. The Croí Cónaithe (Towns) Scheme is a Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant delivered by local authorities.

What is the Croí Cónaithe (Cities) Scheme?

  • The Cities Scheme aims to bridge the viability gap between the cost of building apartments and market sale price.

  • The Cities Scheme will be managed by The Housing Agency with €450m available to support 5,000 apartments over the coming years.

  • These apartments will be for sale to all owner-occupiers; qualifying buyers can avail of Help-to-buy and First Home Shared Equity.

  • The areas include Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick and Waterford city areas.

What is the Croí Cónaithe (Towns) Scheme?

  • The Towns Scheme is a grant of up to a maximum of €30,000 which is available for the refurbishment of vacant properties for occupation as a principal private residence.

  • Where the refurbishment costs are expected to exceed the standard grant of up to €30,000, a maximum top-up grant amount of up to €20,000 will be available where the property is confirmed by the applicant to be derelict bringing the total grant available for a derelict property up to a maximum of €50,000.

  • Properties considered for inclusion must be vacant for two years or more and built before 1993.
