MARY WILLIE'S
Situated in the heart of Ireland, Mary Willie’s is a famous and well-known hostelry, more particularly by Hurling fans travelling to and from Semple Stadium in Thurles or Croke Park, from all corners of Ireland. It's long history includes a meeting between Eamon DeValera & Michael Collins during the turbulent Civil War, three weeks before Michael Collins was shot.
The property comprises a most attractive Public House with residence overhead, a private carpark and three separate paddocks, extending to some 2 acres in total. There are also a large variety of Sheds and Outhouses to the rear, ideal for storage and other ancillary uses.
These historic Premises are well appointed, with Public Bar, Second Bar / Function Room, Catering Kitchen and Customer Toilets on the Ground Floor. The First Floor contains a large Living Room, 4 no. well apportioned Bedrooms and Bathroom.
The poperty also benefits from high-speed broadband, providing excellent scope for remote working and ideally suited for state-of-the art business communications.
LOCATION
Mary Willie's is located just off the former Dublin / Cork national road, almost equidistant from both Cities, and each just over an hour away. The property is approximately 30 minutes from Kilkenny, 5 minutes from Urlingford, 10 minutes from Horse and Jockey, 10 minutes from Thurles and 15 minutes from Cashel. The M8 Dublin / Cork Motorway is easily accessibly from either the Urlingford or Horse & Jockey interchanges nearby.
Although the former Main Road is now bypassed by the M8, there’s still considerable traffic and with the renewed interest in rural Ireland and all it has to offer by way of reduced property prices, country living, schools, broadband / remote working and overall lifestyle, Mary Willie’s has a bright future.
OTHER USES
Mary Willie's, although very successful in it's own right as a pristine and well-regarded Public House, has excellent potential to fully convert into a residential dwelling if required, or for further development as a boutique hotel for tourists, cyclists or culinary students, with a lovely compact function room where small weddings and birthday parties were held pre-Covid.
HISTORY
Legend has it that Mary Stapleton and Willie Wiley eloped from their native parish and settled in this place, a busy crossroads, to later open a roadhouse for weary and thirsty travellers. Happily, the name survives and is now part of local folklore, still serving up hospitality in all forms to locals and visitors alike. There’s also a strong historical connection, in that De Valera and Michael Collins met there, three weeks before the latter was killed at Béal na Bláth. It seems that word got out about the meeting and there was an ambush by the Anti Treaty forces, so violent that there are bullet holes in the walls to this day. This event is covered in Eoin Neeson’s, ‘The Irish Civil War’. Another great but true story is that Con Houlihan, the renowned Irish Press Reporter, regularly compiled his account of hurling matches taking place at nearby Semple Stadium, from the barstool at Mary Willie’s, without ever setting foot in Thurles!
MUSIC
As well as a popular GAA watering hole, the Pub was also well regarded for its Irish Music sessions, hosting Liam O’Murchu amongst many others. Music festivals were also held in the Summer, coinciding with The Trip to Tipp, Feile, etc, whereby Mary Willie’s held its own ‘Craic at the Back’, in their own large enclosed beer garden.

About the Area
Thurles (Irish: Durlas) is a town in County Tipperary, surrounded by the Silvermine Mountains (to the northwest) and the Slieveardagh Hills (to the southeast). The town itself is built on a crossing of the River Suir. The M8 connects Thurles to Cork and Dublin via the N75 and N62 roads. The R498 links Thurles to Nenagh. The still functioning Thurles railway station opened 1848.
There are a number of amenities in the area, including several schools and third-level colleges. Semple Stadium is located here; the second largest GAA stadium in Ireland with a capacity of 53,500, second only to Croke Park in Dublin.
