About the Area
Ballyhaise is a picturesque rural area, situated km (4.3 mi) north-northeast of Cavan Town. It is approximately a 15 minute drive, via the N54, to the border with Northern Ireland. The River Annalee flows near the village. The village itself is home to Ballyhaise GFC, the local Gaelic football team, their home pitch being Annalee Park, the biggest Gaelic football pitch in County Cavan.
Notable buildings include Ballyhaise House, situated on the Annalee river (a tributary of the Erne). It was built for the Newburghs, a local landowning family, in the 1730s. It is said to contain the earliest surviving oval room in Ireland and Britain. Its architect was Richard Cassels, a German living in Dublin, who designed many of the capital's finest buildings and squares (including Leinster House). Ballyhaise House has been used as a Teagasc agricultural college since the beginning of the 20th century. The bridge near the house is reputed to be nearly 300 years old.
