Riverdale School House
Dairy Road
Kilbrittain
Co Cork
P72 PC91
Description
FEATURES
The property exudes character. The stone fronted external façade is enlivened by the large gothic style windows of the schoolhouse and the timber sash windows on the original house. The school room includes 4 stained glass windows which provide a unique insight into the minds of those who built it in 1867. The property has the benefit of oil fired central heating with underfloor heating in the kitchen and radiators throughout the rest of the house. There is a private water supply with deep bored well and UV filtration. The water within the house is pressurised.
GROUNDS
As the name ‘Riverdale’ would suggest, the property enjoys an enviable setting with wonderful south facing views over the green fields of the valley below as the stream flows to Kilbrittain village. The grounds enjoy great privacy being laid out in lawn interspersed with mature and young trees alike. Included within the various trees planted are two evergreen oaks, several oak trees, an Irish yew tree said to be planted to commemorate the opening of the school in 1867, weeping willows and a copper beech tree while the orchard area includes flowering cherry, maple, apple, pear and an almond tree.
ACCOMMODATION
An entrance porch with bathroom off leads to the kitchen/dining room. The kitchen features former inglenook fireplace within which is an oil-fired Rayburn central heating range cooker, hand-made oak kitchen units and countertop, Belfast sink and gas hob. From the kitchen, a stairs leads down to a basement utility area with washer and dryer while there are separate steps to the living room which includes an open fire place. The school room is a delight. It retains much of its original character with high ceilings and large gothic windows including 4 with stained glass. There is a large stove, decorative cornicing and timber floors which add to the ambiance of this multi-functional space.
The first floor is accessed via a stairs from the former school room and includes 3 double bedrooms with built in storage. Two of the bedrooms are ensuite while there is an additional family bathroom.
HISTORY
The main house was built in two phases. In c.1867, the gothic style school room was added to a pre-existing early 19th or possible 18th century house. The school has links to the Stawell family of Kilbrittain Castle who likely donated at least one of the stained glass windows which provides the date of 3rd August 1867 for it’s likely opening. The school room has had multiple functions throughout the years with divine service being performed there at least until 1910 while also functioning as a dance hall later in the 20th century. The property was purchased by the present owners in 1982 and has been lovingly restored into a family home over the intervening years.
