The area is steeped in history and folklore, the ruins of Elfeet Castle, which you pass on the way to the house, is believed to have been used as a watch tower. It is reputed that is was from Elfeet Bay that a stone was thrown that Killed Queen Maeve of Connacht who was bathing on the nearby island of Inchclearaun.
Barley Harbour is also nearby which offers a stone slabbed slipway for launching boats and temporary mooring.
